ADEA Honorary Life Membership Award 2023 goes to Jane Giles

Congratulations to Jane Giles for receiving the ADEA Honorary Life Membership Award 2023 to recognise her exceptional leadership and outstanding contribution to diabetes care and education and the CDE profession.

The award is the most prestigious ADEA award and is bestowed upon only one member every year.

This year’s award was presented at the Australasian Diabetes Congress in Adelaide on 24 August.

In accepting the award, Ms Giles said the accolade surprised her.

‘The feeling you get when you see something develop, see it work, and see people using it are the thanks I was always happy with,’ she said.

Ms Giles said she appreciated her involvement with ADEA as it had ‘created a bigger picture view of the structures and the systems that frame the work we do’.

‘Thank you, ADEA, for allowing me this journey with you,’ she said.

‘I’ll never forget all the things I’ve learnt and the people I’ve met.’

Jane Giles was named the ADEA Honorary Life Membership Award 2023 recipient.

About Jane Giles

In the first half of her career, Ms Giles held nursing roles in South Australia, Victoria, and Western Australia.

These included general nursing student at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and registered nurse at the Modbury Hospital in South Australia.

In the 1990s, her connection with diabetes care and education began as a community health nurse/diabetes educator at the Adelaide Central Community Health Service (formally Eastern Community Health Service).

From there, she became a CDE and her employment included leadership roles in diabetes services at South Australia Health, including in rural and remote services.

Those roles, which she held for a combined 25 years until February 2023, were project coordinator/clinical practice consultant and advanced nurse consultant and clinical lead.

During that period, she also began a casual academic position at Flinders University.

She still holds that role alongside being a diabetes nurse consultant, which she began in early 2023.

Following her nursing qualifications, Ms Giles completed a Graduate Certificate in Diabetes Education, a Bachelor of Education (Adult Education and Educational Computing), and a Master of Nursing (Advanced Nursing Practice).

She has also undertaken courses in cardiac monitoring and rhythm analysis, financial management, and chronic conditions.

Ms Giles’ professional affiliations, memberships, and voluntary work have been vast and varied across many health, education, and research organisations.

These include ADEA, Diabetes Australia, Australian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society, International Diabetes Federation, Flinders University, and South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute.

Ms Giles has received several project grants and has authored academic papers published in leading diabetes journals, including The Australian Diabetes Educator and Diabetes Management Journal.

The Honorary Life Membership Award is the latest in Ms Giles’ long list of accolades, which include the SA Health Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Award in Education and the University of South Australia Chancellor’s Award.
