Credentialled Diabetes Educators (CDEs) are the unsung heroes dedicated to empowering individuals living with diabetes on their journey to better health. Passionate and knowledgeable, CDEs are at the forefront of diabetes education and care, providing personalised guidance, education and support to those navigating the complexities of managing diabetes.

The CDE of the Year Awards are a prestigious recognition of individuals who have shown outstanding commitment, innovation and impact in the field of diabetes education and support. These awards celebrate those who have made significant contributions to improving the lives of individuals living with diabetes.

The awards are run by ADEA with financial support from global research-based pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly.

Award Categories:

CDE of the Year
Recognise and honour the outstanding achievements and contributions of CDEs in the provision of high-quality diabetes education to empower and demonstrate support for people affected by diabetes.

• A nominee must be practising as a CDE in Australia for at least 12 months prior to the date of their nomination,
• A nominee can be nominated more than once by different nominators.
• One winner from each state/territory will be selected, with the overall winner to receive the Jan Baldwin National CDE of the Year Award.
• A nominee must be practising as a CDE in Australia for at least 12 months prior to the date of nomination.
• A nominee cannot be a receipt of the Jan Baldwin National CDE of the Year Award in a previous year.

Each state and territory will have a winner and from this group, a national winner will be selected to receive the prestigious Jan Baldwin National CDE of the Year title. State winners will receive a $1000 scholarship. The national Jan Baldwin winner will receive a $5000 scholarship and the opportunity to speak at the 2025 Australasian Diabetes Congress on the Gold Coast.

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander CDE of the Year
Recognise the achievements of an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander CDE for their contributions to diabetes management and for supporting for people affected by diabetes.

• A nominee must be currently practising as a CDE in Australia and must have been doing so for at least 12 months prior to the date of their nomination.
• A nominee can be nominated more than once by different nominators.
• A nominee cannot be a recipient of the Jan Baldwin National CDE of the Year Award in a previous year.
• A nominee must identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.

There will be one national winner, who will receive a $2000 scholarship

Early Career CDE of the Year
Recognise the tremendous and important contributions that early career CDEs make to those living with diabetes and honour the important role they play in the future of diabetes education and advancement.

• A nominee must be currently practising as a CDE in Australia as of the date of nomination.
• A nominee must have less than five years of experience as a CDE.
• A nominee can be nominated more than once by different nominators.
• A nominee cannot be a recipient of the Jan Baldwin National CDE of the Year Award in a previous year.

There will be one national winner, who will receive a $2000 scholarship

People’s Choice CDE of the Year
Recognise excellence in person-centred care, as nominated by people living with diabetes or caring for someone living with diabetes throughout Australia.

• A nominee must be currently practising as a CDE in Australia as of the date of nomination.
• A nominee can be nominated more than once, by different nominators.
• A nominee cannot be a recipient of the Jan Baldwin National CDE of the Year Award in a previous year.

There will be one national winner, who will receive a $2000 scholarship.

Eligibility for nominees

Nominees are the CDEs who are nominated by either their peers or people living with diabetes and their carers.

1. A nominee must be currently practising as a CDE in Australia at least from the day of being nominated.
2. A nominee must be nominated in the ADEA branch of which they are a member:
   • ADEA-ACT
   • ADEA-NSW
   • ADEA-NT
   • ADEA-QLD
   • ADEA-SA
   • ADEA-TAS
   • ADEA-VIC
   • ADEA-WA
3. A nominee can be nominated more than once by different nominators
4. A nominee cannot be a recipient of the Jan Baldwin National CDE of the Year Award in previous years

Eligibility for nominators

A nominator must submit a nomination for an individual CDE.

CDE of the Year/Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander CDE of the Year/Early Career CDE of the Year

1. A nominator must submit a nomination for an individual CDE.
2. A nominator can submit different nominations for different nominees.
3. Two nominations for the same nominee by the same nominator will be counted as one nomination.
4. Self-nominations are not accepted.
5. Nominations from GPs, allied health practitioners and other CDEs are accepted.

People’s Choice CDE of the Year

1. A nominator must submit a nomination for an individual CDE.
2. A nominator can submit different nominations for different nominees.
3. Two nominations for the same nominee by the same nominator are counted as one nomination.
4. Self-nominations are not accepted.

5. Nominations from people living with diabetes and their family, friends and carers are accepted.

Selection criteria

A distinguished selection committee, composed of experts and leaders from various fields, will review and evaluate the nominations. The selection committee will be responsible for ensuring a fair and impartial assessment of all nominees.

The committee must consist of:

• A minimum of four committee members
• At least two committee members must be CDEs who are current financial members of ADEA
• At least one committee member must be a person living with diabetes.

The committee will give consideration to the following selection criteria when reviewing nominations:

• Demonstrated excellence in diabetes education.
• Leadership and an inspirational role model for diabetes educators.
