Presentation: Physical activity and type 1 diabetes

The session will provide an overview of the metabolic and endocrine response to physical activity in type 1 diabetes and how different exercise parameters can alter this response. Attendees will be given the opportunity to apply and explore current evidence informed strategies to manage blood glucose levels for physical activity in interactive case studies and group discussions.

About the presenter – Marion Brennan, AEP CDE PhD (Candidate)

Marian is a credentialled diabetes educator and accredited exercise physiologist at Diabetes WA and director of the Perth Physical Activity and Diabetes Institute. She has worked across sectors including federal government, private practice, and not-for-profit. Marian completed her Master of Science in Diabetes in 2017 where she piloted a self-management, group education program to address barriers to physical activity in people living with type 1 diabetes. This exploratory work has informed Marian’s current PhD research project at Curtin University. Marian was the recipient of the 2018 ADEA Australian Diabetes Research Foundation, Research Fellowship. Her current research interests are facilitating physical activity in the type 1 diabetes population, using structured group education.
