A diabetes educator provides diabetes self-management education for people with diabetes. They play a major role in self-empowering the person with diabetes by focusing on an individual’s needs, providing knowledge, motivation and support to aid the prevention of diabetes related health complications.
Health practitioners within certain disciplines meeting specific requirements of the Australian Diabetes Educators Association Credentialling Program are awarded status as a Credentialled Diabetes Educator (CDE) for a three-year period. A CDE must demonstrate ongoing commitment to maintaining high professional standards of practice by meeting the requirements of the ADEA Re-credentialling Program (Australian Diabetes Educators Association, 2008), and therefore specialise in the provision of diabetes education.
A health practitioner with CDE status is qualified to provide clients with consistent high quality diabetes education and care. Such status is recognised by Medicare Australia, the Department of Veterans Affairs and Private Health Insurance funds. This recognition allows people living with diabetes to claim rebates for their CDE consultation/s following a referral from their General Practitioner.
