‘Incredible recognition of the collective efforts’: Dr Giuliana Murfet receives ADEA Honorary Life Membership Award

23 August 2024—ADEA is delighted to announce that Dr Giuliana Murfet has been honoured with the prestigious ADEA Honorary Life Membership Award.

This accolade, bestowed by the ADEA Board, recognises Dr Murfet’s extraordinary contributions to diabetes education, clinical practice, and research during her distinguished career.

Dr Murfet’s career has been marked by dedication to advancing diabetes care.

As a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the University of Technology Sydney’s School of Public Health and an active nurse practitioner specialising in diabetes and bariatrics at the Tasmanian Department of Health, she has made significant strides in the co-design and evaluation of rural and regional models of care.

Her work has notably contributed to areas such as diabetes in pregnancy, paediatric diabetes, obesity management in type 2 diabetes, high-risk foot, and the health workforce for diabetes care.

Reflecting on this honour, Dr Murfet expressed her gratitude, saying, “This award is an incredible recognition of the collective efforts of my colleagues and the broader diabetes community”.

“Together, we strive to make lasting differences in the lives of those with diabetes,” she said.

“I am committed to continuing our work, particularly in developing innovative models of care and enhancing the capacity of the healthcare workforce to meet the future needs of diabetes care.”

A Fellow of ADEA and a CDE, Dr Murfet has served in numerous leadership roles, including President of ADEA.

She currently chairs the Medical Educational and Scientific Advisory Council, co-chairs the Health Professional Advisory Council for Diabetes Australia, and is a Steering Committee member of the Living Evidence for Diabetes Consortium.

Her leadership has been pivotal in developing a national capability framework to guide health professional curricula on diabetes, ensuring the next generation of health professionals is well prepared.

Dr Murfet’s contributions to diabetes care and education are recognised globally.

During her sabbatical leave, she completed clinical placements at renowned institutions such as the Joslin Diabetes Centre in the USA, Steno Diabetes Centers across Denmark, University of the Highlands and Islands in Scotland, and the Why Wait and Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan Tier 3 multidisciplinary weight management clinics in Boston and Wales respectively.

Additionally, she played a key role in establishing the first diabetes nursing postgraduate qualification at Brawijaya University in Indonesia.

Among her many accolades, Dr Murfet was named an inaugural Bullwinkel Scholar by the Australian College of Nursing in 2024.

In 2022, she was named the Jan Baldwin CDE of the Year and the CDE of the Year in Tasmania.

She also received the Roche Best Oral Presentation Award at the 2022 Australasian Diabetes Congress and has been a recipient of the Ollie Scholarship and the ADEA Diabetes Research Foundation’s Research Fellowship.

The ADEA Honorary Life Membership Award is limited to one recipient each year, with Dr Murfet becoming the 21st member to receive this distinguished honour since its inception.

Her exemplary leadership, research, and commitment to improving diabetes care have left an indelible mark on the field, and ADEA is proud to celebrate her achievements.
